How to best avoid theft

We often see that the participants leave their assets and other valuables at their seat, which increases the chance of theft. Here are some simple tips on how to avoid this.

  • Avoid the use of wireless equipment as much as possible. Stuff it into a bag, or simply take it with you whenever you leave your seat.
  • Hide any "easy-to-grab" gear you may have, such as external hard-drives, headphones, cameras and the like. Again, put it in a bag.
  • If you're using a laptop at TG, then it's a good idea to use a lock, such as Kensington or similar. Or just simply bring it along.
  • Avoid walking around with huge amounts of money in cash.
  • There's an ATM in the hall, where you can withdraw cash.
  • Be sure to have your bank's telephone number available, so you can disable your card in case you should lose it or have it stolen.
  • Talk to an insurance company about travel insurance. Write down all your equipment’s serial numbers. If something is stolen, or somehow lost, we can easier identify the equipment as yours, if it's retrieved.

If you happen to be alone at The Gathering, you should try and get to know the people around you. This way you can help one another look out for your stuff, and make sure nothing is stolen from you while you're gone.
