Updated: Gigabit for everyone!

In 2008, The Gathering won the VAT-case. The money that was saved from this will now gain the participants. This year, the internal network of the Viking Ship will be renewed and upgraded with the latest news from D-Link.

– For the first time, the participants will get a gigabit-link to their computer. This will be an upgrade for both gaming and other online activities, says Simon Eriksen Valvik, press contact for The Gathering.
In essence, this means that the connections between the computers in the Viking Ship will be faster, but there are several other perks as well.
– This will make the distributions of the lokal TV-streams within The Gathering easier, in addition to open up for the development of new services in the network.
– With the edge switches being upgraded to D-Link DGS-3100-48, together with the Cisco-equipment we use this year, The Gathering is getting an extensive upgrade of it's network. We've worked for this for a couple of years, and it pleases me that we can finally give our participants the gigabit connection they've wanted for so long, says Marcus Sæthershagen, responsible for the technical part of The Gathering.

The doubling of ports on each switch means that the number of switches on each row  is reduced from 3 to 2, so please make sure your networking cable is long enough.

Our Tech:Organizer, Marcus Sæthershagen, have now confirmed that he has ordered some 7 kilometers of TP cable to support two uplinks per switch. This means that each switch will have a 2Gbit/s link to the core switch.

Future oriented

The new switches are naturally more stable, and will give the participants a whole new experience.
– The entire system is renewed. As one of the largest computer parties in the world, we wish to be ahead when it comes to technology, explains Eriksen Valvik.
The participants will mainly experience increased stability, better information flow and internal transfer speeds.
– The Gathering has high demands for the quality of the network equipment. D-Link has delivered that, and we're very pleased with the cooperation so far, he says.

VATmoney put to use

KANDU is behind this purchase, as a result of the vat-money that were saved.
– 2500 geeks demonstrated against VAT on The Gathering's tickets. We can finally celebrate what we've achieved.
