Overclockers at TG

Quite a few extreme overclockers have in later years attended TG. There have even been some world record attempts in the Vikingship earlier years. This year there is a whole row dedicated to people who spend their time pushing their computer equipment to the limit. We had chat with the group to see what this is all about.

-Who are you?
We are normal people. Many think picking 100 hardwaregeeks in a crowd of 150, but its just as hard as finding the needle in the haystack even if your name is Gladstone Gander.

- What are you doing?
We are a group of hardware enthusiasts who spend most of our time playing with hardware and over clocking. You could say we.ve been bitten by the overclocking-bug. What we.re trying to achieve with our overclocking, is simply to set records using high end hardware, adding a scent of patience and courage. We also add liquid nitrogen and dry ice.

-Nitrogen and dry ice is stuff we usually don't hear mentioned in the context of computers. Why do you need these extreme measures?
The reason for these extreme cooling liquids is that the processor generates heat we must get rid of when over clocking. Usually we use a chilling tube of copper/aluminium that we attach above the processor. We put liquid nitrogen or dry ice in the tube, the dry ice holding a temperature of -75 degrees Celcius, and the nitrogen being -196. This helps keeping the temperatureof the processor low while increasing the frequency of the CPU.

- What is overclocking?
Overclocking is just like tuning a car. You adjust a little bit here and there and improve the performance.

- Why do you do this?
Because it’s fun, simple as that. Look back to the time you were three years old, and had one of those toy-wagons to play with. It was always fun to see how fast they could go before it said boom, or how far you could take the playing until your parents said stop. Or perhaps the day you got your first moped. Was always fun to see how much horsepower you could squeeze out of that little 50cc engine, and of course see how fast you could get it to run.

If you want to pay a visit to the overclockers you can find them at row 1 and 2 seat 1 - 15.
