Duckers of Outracks held a seminar on demomaking and demoeffects at The Gathering 2006. You can download the "Demomaker`s Kickstart Kit" including examples, tutorials, plugins and more here.

Information about creative competitions from the "Demomaker's Kickstart Kit":

Combined Demo

Round up your buddies and create a programmed executeable file showing real time graphical effects and playing music. Amaze the crowd with your supreme programming, artistic and musical skills. Windows, Linux, Mac and Amiga demos are allowed.

Combined 64k Intro

Create a programmed executeable file in maximum 65536 bytes showing real time graphics effects and playing music. Insane coders can press several minutes of audiovisual entertainment into those poor 64 kilobytes. Are you up for the task?

Fast Intro

A theme will be announced on the party. You and your team will have 8 hectic hours to complete a demo or intro presenting your artistic interpretation of the theme. Giving the audience a good laugh tends to give more votes than coderporn in this category.

Freestyle Graphics

Let loose the artist in your stomach and paint, draw, render or synthesize a beautiful, inspiring picture for the audience to admire. Deliver a PNG picture before the deadline and the big screen is yours for a full 30 seconds.

Themed Graphics

Use your creativity to create a picture showing interpretation of this year's theme: Environmental Earth Values and Transformers. No questions will be asked.

Capture the Spirit of The Gathering

Keep your camera with you at all times. You never know when that magical TG moment of the year comes arround. And if you catch it, you might be up for a prize.

Reason Fast Music

A sample pack will be released at the party. You must make a song in Reason using only samples provided as sound sources. Can you turn the wierd samples into a cool tune in just a few hours?

Wild

The compo for anything that can be shown or played on the big screen. Animation movies, demos for weird platforms and videos of your extremely interesting tg preparations are examples of excelent wild entrys. Videos of you fragging in CS is however, is an example of how to get disqualified with ease.

Useless Utility

Got a really bad idea for an utility application? Turn it into a good idea by creating it and delivering in the Useless Utillity compo. If the application is really useless, you might even receive a just as useless price. Like tickets for The Gathering 06. Or a 1970's typewriter.

Gamedev

Create a game and deliver before deadline. Demonstrate it on the big screen to convince everyone that your game is worth playing and voting for.
