A success story

It is 2007 and it is Tuesday the day before I and my friends will go to Hamar and TG for the first time. I am surfing www.gathering.org one last time before going to bed. Hey, there is a new update called "Crew For A Day". Join the Crew for one day and find out how TG is made and run. I find it interesting and send in my application.

Ida joined Crew For A Day last year, and became a crew memeber at once.

After too many hours in a car with a dude from Trøndelag who is smoking the whole time I am finally in front of my brand new PC playing my favourite games in Vikigskipet. Awsome! Suddenly there is a message is ticking in saying I am to report to the Info:Desk the next morning for the Crew for a Day program. Yey!

I get a Crew sweater and a Crew badge during the information meeting. (I forgot all my sweaters and T-shirts when I left for TG, so I really liked the sweater.)

My first assignment is in Info:Desk for 3 hours. It is an OK job, and you learn a lot when you have to answer all kinds (really all kinds) of questions from the participants. But to me that job did not give me that WOW! Feeling.

My next assignment is with Security. I am paired with a nice security dude (they were very nice all of them actually). Our job is to roam the whole arena. We chat with each other and the participants and see that things move well and that all behave. Roaming duty is an incredible chanced to see and learn many things (and I realise that I really like this). Seeing all the really strange stuff people have brought with them is unbelievable. When we finish our shift there is a routine debrief in the Security area.

The Security shift leader is a really big bloke. He wants to chat and asks if I would like to join the Security Crew for the remainder of TG. YES! Off course! This is great fun!

Now afterwards I do not regret saying yes for a second. When I came to TG I did not know a single person from the Crew, now I sit here aching to get back to meet with everybody once again. The days go so slow these last weeks. I look forward to nearly freezing to death on duty in the parking lot (Note to self: Bring more warm clothing!), gently waking up people who have gone to bed where they should not, spend the nights on a hard concrete floor, drink strong dark coffee in the morning, hang out in the Crew cafeteria and help participants.

The Crew For A Day program was great fun. I met a lot of new really nice and cool people and found out what it takes to make and run something as big, impressive and wonderful as TG. And you get the most comfortable sweater in the world. The program is an excellent opportunity to see things from "the other side" of TG. If you want to know more, and contemplate applying for the Crew next year I really, really recommend trying it for a day.

See you in Hamar!

Ida
