Many have asked, many have expectations - did we hear anyone say 100Gbit/sec internet?
This year we will set a new world record with an internet capacity of 100 Gbit/s.
That's about three times as fast as the total capacity of TG10 and is equal to 12 800 MB per second.
It's hard to explain this amount of data, but if we assume a song from iTunes is 5 MB we can download 2560 songs every second.
- It's fun to see that a Norwegian computer party can be world leading in the usage of technology like this, says The Gathering's head of PR and information Simon Eriksen Valvik.
The internet access is delivered by Altibox, Norway's premier provider of services over fibre.
- With our fibre broadband it's possible to break records in transferring data. Our participation at The Gathering shows what we can do in the future, says Altibox CEO, Leif Aarthun Ims.
The core network in Vikingskipet is delivered by the world leading company Cisco.
- The Gathering contributes to increased competence and innovation among the youth and is a unique phenomenon on a global scale, considering the size of the event. The entire Norwegian society is dependent on a supply of highly qualified personnel in the IT sector. These young enthusiasts may be everything worth for Norway in the long run, says Cisco CEO Jørgen Myrland
UNINETT about the net of the future
- It's gratifying that we're now seeing 100 Gbit/s technology being deployed and that the technology companies are using such a trend setting event to show the capacity which proper networks will have in the near future says UNINETT CTO, Olaf Schjelderup
