Fast remix

Skip straight to the rules

Remix a track we give you, in four hours.

Rules

  1. Hand-in

Entries in the freestyle music competition must be delivered through the web-based compo system.

If you really want to make us happy, please hand in a Zip or Rar file containing the track itself and a short text file (file_id.diz/.nfo/.txt) with information about the entry as well as contact info.

  2. Pre-selection

This is a fun compo, and we will try to play all entries for the audience. If there are more entries than we have time for, we might cut tracks based on our own perception of entertainment value and production quality.

Tracks not selected for the show can not be voted for.

  3. Deciding a winner

The winner will be chosen by popular vote.

  4. Allowed formats

    • MP3
    • Ogg Vorbis (.ogg)

Other file formats are not allowed, and will result in a disqualification.

Do yourself and everyone else a favor, and use a quality encoder with high bitrate settings. Your track will sound better, so don't be cheap. Don't forget to tag your file properly!

  5. Mandatory use of the content provided (the remix kit)

The entry must contain recognizable parts of the original track, either sampled from the provided audio or recreated.

Cover versions will be allowed, for those who feel they can do better than the original artist. It still has to be possible to recognize the original track though. Translating the lyrics to Klingon and singing them to another melody will not be accepted (and will be considered a criminal offense, punishable by Vulcan death grip).

Submitting four minutes of white noise stating that it represents your artistic interpretation of the original track will get you nowhere.

  6. Use of copyrighted material

Use of unlicensed samples is not allowed. Any participant must be ready to provide documentation that samples used are licensed for use and publication. Failing to provide such documentation upon request will result in disqualification of the entry. If you are in doubt, don't use the sample.

You are obviously allowed to use any material in the remix kit we give you for the compo.

  7. Maximum length

    Four (4) minutes.

Don't take this as an obligation to actually fill four minutes. Four hours is not much time to do a remix, and repeating the same content for much of the track will most likely bore the audience (and us) to death.

  8. Number of entries per participant

One entry per participant. Co-productions are allowed. If multiple people cooperate on a track, neither will be allowed to hand in other tracks.

  9. No-go limit

The compo will be held if we receive 3 or more entries.

  10. General rules

The general rules for the Gathering 2009 creative competitions apply to this compo.
